SELECTING THE CORRECT SPINDLE MOUNT
FOR YOUR POWER CHUCK APPLICATION
SHORT TAPER SPINDLES
For the short taper lathe chuck spindle noses Type A, D and C (DIN)
measure the pilot diameter and length, bolt circle diameter and
diameter of the holes.
In the case of an A type mount check the number of bolt circles (one
for A2 and two for A1). All chucks with A1 mount can be
installed on a-1 spindle nose only.
all chucks with A2 mount can be installed on A1 or A2 spindle noses.
LONG TAPER SPINDLES
For the long taper spindle noses (Type L), check the pilot diameter,
length and thread size.
THREADED SPINDLES
For the threaded spindle noses, check the thread diameter, number of
threads per inch and length, pilot diameter and length, plus overall
length.

TYPES OF POWER CHUCKS
DRAW TUBE ACTUATED CHUCKS
These chucks are actuated by a hydraulic or air powered
tube or bar moving forward and backward to open or close the chuck jaws.
These chucks may be found in either a wedge block or lever action
design.
COUNTER BALANCED CHUCKS
Counter balanced chucks are designed with counter balancing weights
built in the body of the chuck. As the chuck rotates faster the
weights counter act the centrifugal force created by the jaws. The
faster the chuck is rotated the more counter-acting force is generated,
thus allowing higher spindle speeds for faster machining rates.
INDEX CHUCKS
Index chucks enable the work part to be indexed in a controlled radial
angular locations. They are used to maintain a common center for
several operations on a work part without removing the part from the
chuck. The part can be rotated in the chuck without removal from
the chuck.
SELF-CONTAINED CHUCKS
These chucks have a hydraulic or air cylinder built into the chuck body
which actuates the chuck jaws to move them to clamp or unclamp. |
